Bartholomew Roberts real name was John. Perhaps, he thought that the name Bartholomew had more dash. He was called "Black Bart" but not during his lifetime. When he was pirating he was about 38 years old. He liked to dress to impress in fancy frock coats and lace trimmed shirts. At the time of one ship's boarding he was seen wearing a crimson waistcoat and gold watch and chain.
Roberts was said to be tall, an imposing figure of a man, and swarthy with long and thick black hair. He was also considered to be a "gentleman pirate". He had a strict code of laws, or ship's articles, that had to be followed. He was also said to be a non-drinker.
